Creativity and technical innovation are high in the air at lighting design studios, laboratories, and manufacturers. See below for six recently introduced lighting solutions for indoor commercial and retail spaces, or wherever you need a pop of illumination inspiration.
Georgina, Luxxbox
Inspired from a design in the California and Australia studio’s archives, this acoustic pendant combines a textured dome structure with a modern take on the 2017 Flotte Lantern’s crisscross pattern; an elegant, frosted glass diffuser echoes the detailed crisscross pattern. Made of PET, the 30.7"-diameter dome comes in silver gray and with a CCT of 3000K, 3500K, or 4000K. The dimmable fixture delivers 1,239 lm at 12W. luxxbox.com
Cylinders and Entity Cylinders, CSL Lighting
CSL, a division of Hudson Valley Lighting Group, has upgraded its Cylinders and Entity Cylinders wall-mounted or suspended fixtures to have lower profile canopies and pull-off, removable bezels for easy maintenance. They both use CSL’s patented, low-glare Silent Vu optic system and offer a higher lumen output suitable for spaces with high ceilings. The wall-mounted version has a 3G vibration rating due to its ability to withstand vibrations from roadside traffic. The Cylinders directional lights come in 2", 3", and 5" diameters and in 10-3/8" and 12" lengths; the Entity Cylinders come in shorter lengths of 4" and 6". Both are available in round or square shape and in semi-gloss white, matte black, or a custom color. csllighting.com
Magellan, Mark Architectural Lighting
This collection of large-format circular luminaires includes pendants, surface-mounted and recessed ceiling and wall fixtures with a seamless, drum-style luminaire that appears to be carved from one mass. Magellan can output 600 lm to 48,500 lm for those multistory spaces with soaring ceilings. The luminaires used nLight and nLight AIR control options that can connect to a network for remote programming, firmware updates, and scheduling. A flush lens or edge view lens hides or teases the light source, respectively. An optional recyclable, polyester felt acoustic lens finish offers an NRC of 0.45-0.90 and is Red List–compliant. marklighting.com/magellan
Scraplights Linear, Graypants
In 2008, Seattle- and Amsterdam-based Graypants gained a following with its round, eye-catching, recycled-cardboard pendants. The latest evolution of Scraplights features warm downlight delivered from linear form factor with an organic, curved silhouette, each precisely shaped by hand of corrugated carboard cut with a CNC mill or knife and with assembled with a nontoxic adhesive and fire retardant. Each dimmable fixture uses a 26W linear LED that outputs 2,200 lm at 2700K standard and 90 CRI. The three forms—Disc, Drop, and Olive linear—are 45.5"-46" long, and none weigh more than 6 lbs. graypants.com
Hornet HP Select, Amerlux
The latest addition to the Hornet downlight series, this retail and commercial fixture can deliver more than 2,000 lm in a 75-degree distribution via a round or square aperture. A Solite lensing feature helps enhance visual comfort and its trimmed, trimless, or millwork finish options allow the fixtures to blend in with the environment. The Hornet HP Select can integrate with existing dimming systems and is equipped with an electronic constant current LED driver and ELV or TRIAC dimming. Color temperature options range from 2700K to 4000K, with CRIs of 83 or 90+. Trim finishes include matte black, white, and silver, and an optional white or black flange. amerlux.com
Bubble Collection, Tracy Glover Studio and Metier LA
The first product collection collaboration for TGS, this luminaire family combines handmade American brass metalwork with the Italian Bullicante glass-blowing technique, which refracts light through bubbles in the handmade globe diffusers; a uniform opaline glass diffuser is an option. The collection includes a single- and double-bubble pendant, a single-bubble flush mount, and a double-bubble sconce. The dimmable luminaires have 4.5"- or 6"-diameter bubbles, a CCT of 2700K, and multiple metal finishes, including black oxide (shown). tracygloverstudio.com
