Stanley A. Milner Library

Ceilings Elevate Iconic Community Focal Point

The Edmonton Public Library celebrated the grand opening of its renewed Stanley A. Milner Library and has become a focal point for the community and culture in downtown Edmonton. The updated library not only reinvented its former box-shaped structure into a flowing, angular, modern icon, but also reimagined its interior as a brighter, quieter, more inviting and innovative public space. Anchoring an emerging cultural district around Sir Winston Churchill Square, the Milner Library helps create a thriving and vibrant downtown Edmonton. Meeting the growing and changing needs of the Milner Library’s 1.2 million annual visitors, Teeple Architects reshaped the interior to bett

Wood Aesthetic That Absorbs Sound

When Plunkett Raysich Architects designed the new building for the Madison Area Technical College’s Goodman South Campus, they selected a linear metal ceiling system that offered a biophilic design-friendly wooden aesthetic and effectively managed sound in the bustling corridors and common areas. The Planar linear metal ceiling from Rockfon has the look of a wooden ceiling, without the weight and maintenance issues associated with an actual wood ceiling. The design team at Plunkett Raysich specified the ceiling system in its oak woodgrain finish. Beyond beauty, this ceiling system is also adept at absorbing soundwaves and can satisfy design requirements that necessitate an NRC value of

“The Den” Fine Arts Auditorium & Gymnasium, Noble Public School District

Ceilings are a Slam Dunk for The Den

Stone wool and metal ceiling panels optimize acoustics and enhance aesthetics at school in Oklahoma. Oklahoma’s Noble Public School District’s old auditorium was built in 1950 and seated less than 400 people. In the 2020s with nearly 3000 students in the district, this small facility meant that some of the fine arts programs had to be outsourced to other locations. Similarly, the former high school gym was not large enough to host competitive tournaments.Investing in facility improvements across the school district, a 2017 bond allocated more than half of its total to fund, $19 million, to design and construct new facilities. Respecting the district’s goals and budget, TAP

Open Office Spaces Optimize Acoustics

Cybersecurity and identity management software company, SailPoint Technologies, recently moved into its new Northwest Austin offices. The location spans four floors and 65,000 sq. ft. within the 165,000-sq.-ft. building. In need of more space to accommodate its rapid growth, SailPoint’s new workspace nearly doubled the company’s previous Austin office space, which had been spread out across two buildings. According to the Austin Business Journal, the Austin-based staff expanded from 124 people in 2017 to nearly 500 in 2019, representing half of its global employees.Using sound-absorbing materials to optimize acoustics in an open office can benefit associates by accommodating both

CoolToday Park Sarasota, Fla.

Ceiling Solutions a Home Run at Atlanta Braves Spring Training Complex

The new North Port location in Sarasota County gives the team a 30-year lease on a purpose-built facility that mimics its home at Georgia’s SunTrust Park. Built on 80 acres of previously vacant land, the new complex was designed by Fawley Bryant Architects (FBA) to create a state-of-the-art, comfortable and fun environment for players, fans and year-round events. The $140 million complex, named CoolToday Park, centers around a 6,200-seat stadium and a three-story, 55,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse with an athletic training facility and executive offices.  In addition to Spring Training, the complex is envisioned to become the heart of a planned “town center” commercial and resid

Quiet in the Credit Union

Rockfon Artic is an acoustical ceiling tile made from stone wool with a glass scrim surface featuring standard sound absorption. Other features include excellent sag, mold and mildew resistance as well as high fire performance. Shown here: Travis Credit Union branch transformation project in California.

Open Ceiling Cells Blend Together

Magna T-Cells create an open plenum masking system where the suspension and panels blend together to provide a continuous open-cell ceiling appearance while maintaining the ease and accessibility of ceiling suspension and panel systems. It is available in a wide variety of finish options including painted colors, wood-look and metal finishes where the metal contains no organic compounds that would support mold or microbial growth.

University Achieves High Acoustical Performance

The University of Toronto Scarborough Campus’ (UTSC’s) new $52.5 million Environmental Science and Chemistry Building (ESCB) is a study in sound installation. Contributing to the building’s multiple goals, acoustic stone wool ceiling panels and suspension systems support the university’s architectural vision, functional performance requirements and sustainability criteria, and completing the project within budget and on schedule was key. “It was a mission of mine to achieve the highest possible level of efficiency for this type of energy-use intensive building prior to the design team and contractor coming on board,” said UTSC facilities Management Dept.’s project manager, Hovan Stepanian. “
