Patrick Quigley receives IES Los Angeles section Lifetime Achievement Award
At its 50th annual Lumen West event on June 24, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Los Angeles section honored Patrick Quigley with its first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award, named the Beacon Award. Quigley is currently a Los Angeles–based lighting design principal at landscape architecture and urban planning firm Design Workshop, which he joined in 2019. Previously, Quigley was the founder and designer of Patrick B. Quigley + Associates (PBQA), working on projects that include the Central Garden at the Getty Center, Los Angeles; Gallery Alley, Lincoln, Neb.; and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, in Washington, D.C.
At the event, presenters eSquared Lighting Design principal Erin Erdman and LPA Architects lead lighting designer Debra Fox noted Quigley’s dedication to mentoring, supporting, and encouraging others in the lighting design profession, according to a Design Workshop press release. “I’m humbled to receive the inaugural IES Lifetime Achievement award. Southern California has a dynamic and high achieving lighting design community, so it’s particularly pleasing to get this recognition from my peers,” Quigley said in the release.
Quigley studied environmental design at the University of Utah. He began his 45-year-long career with Rob Wolsh Lighting and then with Jules Horton and his firm in New York. Quigley then moved to Los Angeles to help open the West Coast office of Grenald Associates before founding PGQA in 1985.
Quigley became known for his design approach of creating a “choreographed” sequence of illuminated visual events, according to the release; his approach has been covered in Simplified Design of Building Lighting (John Wiley & Sons, 1992) by Marc Schiler; and The Architecture of Light (Conceptnine, 2008) by Sage Russell. His projects have received more than 150 awards, while he is a two-time winner of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Award of Excellence. His work also has been recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives and the American Institute of Architects.
The IES SoCal Illumination Awards program celebrates members of IES Los Angeles as well as IES Orange County and includes Section Service awards and winners of the Russell Cole Memorial Student Lighting Design Competition.
