Just before I started writing this, the streetsweeper meandered past my window, effectively ending my morning meditation. Beyond agitation, the name of the company triggered an avalanche of reveries, ironically, triggering inspiration for this blog. “Elgin” was the sobriquet on the side of the vehicle; it made me smirk because my son pronounces it with a hard “G,” opposed to the infamous British booze. Because my mind is somewhat warped, I Googled the derivation of the name, as I knew it had something to do with Scotland. A far northern city, it is famous for its ruined cathedral, which burnt down not even 20 years after its first stone was laid. That triggered another memory of the same son standing before the copper inlaid doors of St. Anne De Beaupre outside of Quebec City. That triggered thoughts of glass doors (for HVAC purposes) placed before the sentinel doors of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, whose renovation and retrofit we covered earlier this year (JAN). Enough! I’ll be at the dawn of time soon. Here are a few products, including fire-resistive glazing, that might keep such glorious spiritual structures and the like, going for another century.
