Side-by-Side Comparison in Efficiency

Minnesota is hitting new heights when it comes to green energy standards. The state’s first-ever Passive House multifamily development, Hook & Ladder Apartments, opened October 2019 in northeast Minneapolis. It is set to prove just how much of a difference Passive House construction can make in operations cost and occupant comfort compared to buildings designed to conventional energy codes. To create a real-time project demo, lhb Architects designed the complex as a side-by-side experiment with two adjacent, nearly identical apartment buildings. One set of the look alike apartment buildings is built to state energy code specifications, the other to the Passive House Institute U.S. (

Winter-Proof Walls

Winters in Traverse City can be brutal, so when planning its proposed four-story, 47,000-sq.-ft. Trailside45 apartment building in the northern Michigan town, owner, developer, contractor and operator, Westwind Construction, knew it needed a durable, energy-efficient exterior wall system that would also be attractive and easy to maintain. At first, the company tried life-sized samples of a stenciled brick design for the exterior wall. That didn’t achieve the look the design team wanted, so it explored other options.“We envisioned a modern, contemporary design and wanted a versatile exterior appearance, using as many textures as possible to provide exterior character,” said

Resilient Rain Screens

The LP WeatherLogic brand of moisture-management products features an integrated water-resistive barrier system. It is available as a synthetic polymer based screen that can be used with OSB and a WRB house wrap or in conjunction with an integrated panel to maximize the moisture protection of a home, potentially extending the life of the exterior surfaces by adding increased ventilation and drainage. Easy-to-install, its mold-resistive screen works well with all other LP structural products.

Flagship Store a Smooth Operator

For the flagship store in Denver, the architects wanted an ultra-smooth finish to keep reveals and breaks to a minimum, yet that would not neglect energy performance and resiliency. Room & Board desired a façade with a smooth finish—a challenge in this case, in that walls were planned as single monoliths, meaning no cracks or breaks could be visible in this minimalist vision. The owners, along with Roth & Sheppard Architects, Hyder Construction, and Monarch Stucco got together to plan. To ensure they could achieve the desired smoothness, the team created a mock-up and refinished it several times to get the quality and finish desired. Extra time was spent to QA/QC the substrate

Support Group

KarrierPanel is a universal barrier wall alternative to traditional multi-component wall systems, supporting secondary rainscreens systems such as metal or brick façades. The units use Kingspan’s fully engineered KarrierRail to securely and safely transmit loads from a wide range of façade options to the structural supports behind the insulated panel. The system employs QuadCore Technology, Kingspan’s self-blended hybrid insulation core.

Two-in-One Moisture Control

Combining a moisture-barrier membrane with fiberglass lath, the new Delta-Dry & Lath rainscreen system allows for faster installation and ensures better envelope performance over time in stucco and manufactured stone façades. The resulting rainscreen design enables quicker drying of any moisture that penetrates exterior cladding and reduces risk of façade staining or failure.

Getting Back on Track with Style

With a concentrated effort to revitalize the downtown of Cliffside Park, N.J., Park Town Centre—13 stories of rental apartments atop a two-story retail level—was eyed as a way to bring new energy into a tired business district. Find a more efficient and cost-effective structural façade system to complete a planned mixed-use development that ran into economic issues. Town officials in Cliffside Park, N.J., had big plans for revitalizing their downtown when they began assembling properties for a new, signature mixed-use development back in 2002.

Terracotta Treasure

The NCAA Headquarters expansion by RATIO, features an ALPHATON terracotta rainscreen in a standard finish. The system allows air to circulate behind its panels, creating pressure equalization that prevents water from being drawn into the building. A vapor barrier on the outside face of the system’s back-up wall serves as a final deterrent against air and water penetration. The extruded double-leaf panels are available in 18 standard colors and glazings, and can be incorporated in horizontal or vertical support systems.
