Colorful Solution

Designers with Missoula, Mont.-based In2itive Architecture decided late in the building process to punch up the color of the façade for a new medical facility in their hometown. The four-story headquarters for Consumer Direct Care Network now features more than 18,000 sq. ft. of Envelope 2000 composite panels in Regal Blue, Sky Blue and Silver Grey.

No Chicago H2O Blues

Very near Lake Michigan in Chicago, Northwestern Medical Center faced several challenges in bringing a new campus building to life. Designed by Perkins+Will, the project involves a phased construction where a 14-story base building is presently under construction; a 20-story tower addition is planned for construction in five to 10 years. Since the project is built-out to all property lines there are no at-grade landscape areas, which presented a particular challenge given the city’s Dept. of Stormwater Management permit requirement that the project account the total building mass and footprint. Translation: 10,000 cubic ft. of stormwater detention was required. Further, city code requi

The Proof is in the Flooring

Building products can easily claim numerous accolades of their technologies, but the real proof comes through end-user feedback. A great example of such well-vetted research is Johns Hopkins Hospital’s 90-day testing program of 20 resilient and non-carpet flooring products. Emerging from the pack was Ecore Commercial Flooring’s Terrain Rx, a rubber fusion-bonded to a contemporary, modern heterogeneous vinyl sheet surface, which reduces the risk of falls and delivers both sound control and comfort. Also testing well for durability, stain removal and clean-ability, JHH went on to install the product in 56 inpatient rooms at the Meyer Neuro & Rehab facility in Baltimore.

Door Flexibility

The ProCare 8300 has a flush bolt at eye level, instead of out of reach at the top of the door, and features a simple push button that allows nurses to push down the door when their hands are full. It also won’t latch onto patient’s IVs or staff badges.

Germicidal Tendencies

The luminaire pairs direct/indirect ambient illumination with options for tunable white performance or White Light Disinfection, which emits a germicidal frequency to protect indoor surfaces from harmful bacteria.Judge’s Comment: “I’ve seen disinfecting lights from other manufacturers, but as a whole, the entire package is nice, and not available from any others.”

Shading Meets Biophilia

Combining shading with biophilic design, the new Asplundh Cancer Pavilion in the suburbs of Philadelphia features a large overhang finished in a hazelnut brown, textured wood grain color at the outpatient facility’s entrance. The large, vertical aluminum sun shade fins and 8-in. to 12-in.-deep horizontal curtainwall cover plates were manufactured by Kawneer and the architectural aluminum components were finished by Linetec. The faux wood finish delivers the warmth of wood without the associated maintenance. The building also features two- and four-sided structural glazed curtainwall.

Rx for Hand Hygiene

In 2010, Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago, one of the country’s premier academic medical centers, launched a major hand-washing campaign aimed at employees, patients and visitors: “Clean Hands Every Time.” According to a hospital press release, two-thirds of Americans fall short in adopting the habit of washing their hands, and 80% of infections are transmitted through touch. If hands are kept clean, the transmission of germs from person to person is greatly reduced. As part of a hospital-wide education campaign on the importance of proper hand hygiene, NMH even self-produced a sing-a-long video parody featuring hospital staff demonstrating their best hand wa

Built to Serve Those Who Served

The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System Medical Center in New Orleans (SLVHCS) features nine buildings uniquely specified to aid the more than 70,000 vets who visit each year. Veteran-specific design includes straight, long stairways, without switchbacks to increase visibility; blind corners were also minimized. Bathrooms are prominently located, as many vets travel from rural areas. Accessibility was championed, with ample and easy wheelchair storage at the entrance.“To design for this specialized patient population and its healthcare needs, we recruited over 100 veterans and 180 VA hospital staff from Louisiana—many of whom are vets themselves—f

Building with a Backbone

The gentle curving façade of the HealthPartners Neuroscience Center in St. Paul, Minn., is meant to evoke the idea of a human spine, and that sense of movement is emphasized through the pairing of a metal-panel rainscreen system against reflective curtainwall glazing. The vision of hometown architects BWBR was realized through the use of smaller than usual panels to create a more monolithic appearance and to simplify installation on the curved façade surface.
