Comedor Restaurant, Austin, Texas

Austin Restaurant Adds Mystery with Glass Brick Wall

The street-facing glass brick wall at Austin’s new restaurant adds mystique to guests and passersby. This needed to be accomplished while fulfilling the daylighting requirements by the city.

Not Quite Open Skies

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians Administration Building in Arlington, Wash., by Womer & Assocs., is designed to look like a canoe when viewed from above, a recognition of their heritage as river people. Inside, natural light was critical, but the architects were concerned about glare and comfort. They commissioned Kalwall to create a custom skyroof for the facility.

Diamond Exchange, Capital C in Amsterdam

Not in the Rough by Any Means

An Architecture Masterprize winner in the mixed-use category, the Diamond Exchange, Capital C in Amsterdam, originally built in 1911, has been transformed, including the “High Light,” a glass and steel dome that added space for various corporate events and gatherings. The faceted diamond-like form, by ZJA with Heyligers design + projects, is reminiscent of the building's original purpose as a facility for processing the importation of diamonds. Much of the renovation restored the original Gerrit van Arkel design, but also adapted the interior for use as a modern, flexible, office environment. The project has won numerous other design awards.Octatube's PV Integrated G

Seeing the Light—Sort of

It’s not uncommon for high-density spaces, such as hospitals and high schools, to be constituted of many windowless areas—places, clearly, where shortages of natural light don’t facilitate the sense of well-being many institutions wish to enact. To address this issue, CoeLux, a company that offers technology that artificially mimics daylight, has experimented with the tech in a number of healthcare spaces, and is reporting some early feedback. At La Tour Hospital in Geneva, several CoeLux systems have been installed throughout the ward, including a CoeLux 60 HC in the waiting room, and nine CoeLux ST Ibla, in one of the “bunker” rooms where patients undergo treat
