Spartanburg's school district enlisted the aid of local architect firm McMillan Pazdan Smith (MPS) who specified multiple Altro flooring products.
Challenge:
Spartanburg, SC, USA—Merging with Carver High School in 1970 into a single entity as the final step of desegregating Spartanburg City Schools, Spartanburg High School provides an opportunity to address the global economy by shaping the minds of future generations.
In 2016, the school district’s residents endorsed a bond measure to carry out a number of construction projects with the intent of implementing significant changes for their school system. This involved converting the former site of the Lan-Yair Country Club into a new state-of-the-art Spartanburg High School that combined elements of both traditional and contemporary design. The campus would surround students with timeless reminders of the school’s historic past while also allowing them to benefit from modern design concepts that promote 21st century teaching and learning.
Influence:
The facility’s 2,500 capacity interior incorporating large classrooms and a dining hall among other updates required durable, safe flooring solutions that prioritized safety and comfort. Stain resistance was also a priority in the school's science lab areas to accomodate rigorous cleaning and potential spills. This lead to a collaboration between MPS and the regional Altro sales representative.
Solution:
MPS specified Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring for use throughout the school’s kitchen. Achieving Altro’s highest slip resistance rating, Altro Stronghold 30 is designed to minimize risk in wet and greasy conditions while its 3mm thickness provides comfort underfoot. Meanwhile, Altro Reliance 25 robust, slip-resistant flooring was selected for the remaining back-of-house areas to help ensure staff safety.
Spartanburg’s expansion also featured Altro Aquarius in the school’s new restrooms. This safety flooring range provides lasting performance in both wet and dry environments, offering optimum slip resistance.
For the school science labs where chemical staining and constant cleaning were inevitable, the flooring would need to be inherently stain-resistant—one of Altro Operetta's specialities. Commonly used in commercial laboratories and compounding facilities, Altro Operetta’s smooth, continuous surface is easy to clean and resists staining as well as discoloration that can result from stringent cleaning regiments over time.
