Designers seek to make Johnston County Airport’s high-visibility restrooms visual extensions of the airport’s modern aeronautical design.

Challenge:

“The owner and board of directors had a clear vision for the design of this airport facility to be top-notch in every way,” said Ray Blackmon, airport director, Johnston Co. Airport. “The men’s and women’s restrooms—located right off the main lobby – were no exception. Because of their central proximity, it was important to make the rooms a visual extension of the airport’s modern aeronautical design.”

“The facility’s overall aesthetic captures the wonder and magic of flight,” said Michael Schulman, Plumbing Designer, PDC Engineers, Raleigh, N.C. For example, the wall surface features a delicate wavy motif that gives a sense of air flow, while the customer service reception area is highlighted with an eye-catching desk in the shape of the wing of an airplane.

After considering a variety of high-end decorative plumbing fixtures, PDC’s plumbing engineering team landed on Verge L-Series Lavatory System.

Influence:

“Verge L-Series was specified because it offered all the characteristics required for our application,” Schulman said. “It provided a higher design, it incorporated two handwashing stations in one piece, and it is made of a beautiful and easy-to-maintain material. But the real clincher was Verge’s elegant look.”

Schulman noted he was impressed with how Verge easily integrates into a commercial restroom space. “There’s a subtlety about Verge that conveys a quiet sophistication. Its shape, material and size all hit the nail on the head for giving the restrooms a first-rate look with an executive feel.”

“Verge addresses all the key restroom design issues from the perspectives of a plumbing engineer, architect, facility manager and owner,” Schulman said. “An exceptional aesthetic, high-quality materials and maintainability characteristics make Verge a first class centerpiece for commercial restrooms.”

Solution:

With its clean lines, simple form and elegant curves, Verge L-Series Lavatory System adds a modern and distinctive flair to the look of high-end commercial restroom applications, such as the women's and men's restrooms at Johnston County Airport. In addition to its sleek and elegant aesthetics, Verge's elongated basin shape is designed to funnel water to the drain to minimize standing water. Verge provides up to three individual drains, creating personalized handwashing space for multiple users.

Verge L-Series is extremely easy to install, clean and maintain. Its basin is made of Bradley's durable, repairable and sustainable Evero Natural Quartz Surface, a resilient natural composite material that is easily molded into seamless shapes. Made from natural materials, such as quartz and granite, plus pre-consumer recycled content and a bio-based resin, natural quartz can contain up to 70% natural content. It has achieved GREENGUARD certification. Evero is available in 13 beautiful colors.

“Everyone from our staff to our visitors loves the look of the Verge sinks,” Blackmon said. “We were looking for a restroom fixture that offered both form and function, and blended well with our design and décor. Verge perfectly filled the bill.”
