Energy Efficiency

Environmental ‘Surfing’ Not so Tough

While energy savings, and resiliency measures, absolutely, factor into justifying the cost of deep conservation measures, it might be the addition of the accounting of human benefits, as part of a comprehensive ROI formula, that will help designers win the day for passive house or net-zero initiatives for clients and owners hesitant to make the jump. So says Carnegie Mellon Professor Vivian Loftness, a participant in international skylight manufacturer Velux’ most recent Daylight Symposium in Paris, in the Fall of 2019. Here are some numbers, Loftness said, design teams should plug in right off the bat:• External shading can displace 20%-40% of today’s cooling loads;&bu

S-5!’s PV attachments

Low Maintenance Housing Solution

Winner of Metal Construction Assn.’s Chairman’s Award, the Keller Court Commons project in Petaluma, Calif., by MAD Architecture, was recognized for its standing seam roof attachment solutions. A “pocket neighborhood” of eight houses, with a small common building, the community draws on the historic agricultural influences of the area, while delivering a low-maintenance housing solution. The architect chose S-5!’s PV attachments as they would not violate roof integrity.

156-unit net-zero village complex, Rotterdam, N.Y.

All Go for Green

MDU development recently completed a 156-unit net-zero village complex in Rotterdam, N.Y. The complex uses submetering from Leviton, including its new Load Center, to remotely monitor energy use for each apartment. This allows staff to see comparisons in HVAC and energy usage, and detect variances, which can sometimes point to malfunctioning equipment, or units consuming excess energy. Yet it’s unobtrusive, and as project developer David Bruns points out, the load center is right in plain view. “It’s a great improvement over the stodgy load centers of the past.”

BIPV modules atop a walkway for the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building in Utah

BIPV in High-Performance Glazing

With a dual function as a balcony, balustrade, glazing or a skylight, Solarvolt BIPV modules from Vitro Architectural Glass come in a variety of configurations, including multiple solar cell arrangements and three unique photovoltaic crystalline silicone types for various effects on aesthetics and performance. Compatible with almost all of Vitro’s glass products, the solar panels with solar cells are arranged between two glass lites with glass-film techniques. The modules come in sizes up to 98 in. × 146 in. and in thicknesses of up to two 12-mm lites.Views of the BIPV modules atop a walkway for the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building in Utah.

590X Steel Replica Window

New Historic Window on the Block

Combining the best of two worlds with historically inspired profiles, narrow sightlines, enhanced energy-efficiency and performance, EFCO introduces the 590X Steel Replica Window. Imitating the look of a classic, industrial steel window in a choice of three standard profiles—bevel, cove and T-grid—or in made-to-order options, project teams can also customize muntins to easily and economically match existing sightlines. The operable window delivers a thermal U-factor as low as 0.42 with a standard low-E product and a condensation resistance factor as high as 71. The window meets AAMA 513 standards for accessibility, and the inclusion of thicker glass enhances acoustic performance

Manufacturer ‘Opens’ Up

A Best of Best “Industrial” winner in th Architecture Masterprize Awards, Jakob’s Saigon Rope Systems factory in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by rollimarchini architects Switzerland | G8A architects, Vietnam, stays true to the Swiss company’s roots. The design is based on two principles: efficiency and aesthetics. The project aims to be a pioneer in Vietnam, with a 100% naturally ventilated factory. Based on passive climatic strategies, adapted to tropical regions, the design has developed a porous façade. The smart green envelope has lush hanging geotextile planters that offer a new dimension to sustainable design. The unique design pays tribute to its context, as well

SlopeShield Plus SA Self-Adhered

Vapor Sandwich Elimination

SlopeShield Plus Self-Adhered (SA) is a highly vapor-permeable roofing underlayment air barrier (AB) material. As an air barrier membrane product, SlopeShield Plus SA stops the movement of air, eliminating damaging moisture transferred by air, and maximizes energy savings while meeting energy code requirements. As a vapor permeable membrane (30 perms) product, it allows the remaining vapor to escape the roof assembly through diffusion. The combined unique features allow the creation of a “self-drying roof,” eliminating a troubling phenomenon called the “vapor sandwich,” when moisture becomes trapped in the roofing assembly.Judge’s Comment: “Good thermal/mo
